Gabesh is an engineered language in development that aims to have a self-segregating morphology, minimal syntax, and schematic, well-defined semantics. Gabesh is extensively influenced by Rick Morneau's Latejami, especially in its approach to lexical semantics and its morphology. The creator comments that “The fundamentals of gabesh are clearly taken from latejami, but some features are left behind, with new ones taking their place.&rdquo Gabesh is an agglutinating language with frequent use of infixes. A formal grammar, a lexicon of at least several hundred words and a basic parser have been created as of June 2020.

Phonology

The phonology is simple and naturalistic. There are five vowels, /i e a o u/, and 14 consonants, /p b f m t d s n l r ʃ k g x/.

The alphabet is as follows.

The Gabesh alphabet
Grapheme ' a b d e f g i k kh l m n o p r s sh t u w y
Phoneme [ʔ] a b d e f g i k x l m n o p r s ʃ t u [w] [j]

(Notable differences from the IPA are highlighted.)

The sounds [j] and [w] are allophones of /i/ and /u/ that occur when adjacent to other vowels. An allophonic glottal stop may be inserted between vowels.

The morphology imposes restrictions on where in a word the various consonants can appear, and these are grounded in observed patterns of natural languages. For instance, modifier morphemes have one of /r l n/ as a final consonant. These consonants have high sonority; as a result, consonant clusters in Gabesh tend to obey the syllable contact law, a postulated phonological universal which states that C.C clusters where the first (coda) consonant has higher sonority than the following consonant are preferred.

Morphology

Word structure is prefix* modifier* (classifier | anaphor | particle). Modifiers and classifiers have a range of meanings, which can be narrowed down with prefixes and modifiers.

Syntax

Semantics

There are logical and non-logical conjunctions:

maw = which implies (Truth claim about the implication, L is a sufficient condition for R) doy = or (T||T) kay = and (T&&T) tey = contrastive and i.e "however" (T&&T) dow = interrogative or (No truth claim) poy = which can only be true if (Truth claim about the dependency, R is a sufficient condition for L) pow = and not (T&F) (can be used as a sentence prefix, assuming an imaginary preceding verb)
